Students will examine these questions: How does someone doing documentary work conduct research in a place unfamiliar to them? What is the process whereby those engaged in documentary work modify and/or revise their ideas while on-site? How does the process of editing photographic images shape the story told to viewers of said photography?

Essential Questions
What can we learn by observing and experiencing first-hand, the life of the people
from another culture? How can we render our experiences so that those who did not
accompany us, can nonetheless get closer to what we observed and learned from our
travels, first-hand? In this course students will visit another culture, and through
photography, the keeping of a process journal, and a photo essay, students will then
document their experiences and represent them for their peers and teachers at the
Ross School.
