On Wednesday, March 3rd we visited a small village near Pisac where the previous day a mudslide destroyed seventy percent of the village. We purchased milk, rice and bread to donate to the people of the village. When we arrived they were lined up to receive tents from the army, as most of their homes were gone. One family lost six people in the slide. We ended up in the middle of a funeral with a long procession to the cemetery that wound its way through the rubble of the village. It stopped outside the remnants of the women’s home and the pallbearers shifted the coffin back and forth in a touching ceremony to say goodbye. We were all overwhelmed with the pain and sorrow that the people were experiencing. While it was difficult for many of the students to witness such sorrow and destruction, their photographs captured the strength and resilience of the Peruvian people. It was a day that many of us will never forget.
